Back Trauma from an Accident

Back Pain from Car AccidentIf your client has been in a vehicle wreck and experiences lower back injury, he or she is not alone. Americans pay at least $50 billion each year on low back pain, the most common cause of work-related disability and a leading contributor to missed work.

Most acute back suffering is due to trauma to the lower back caused by a car accident or other issues with bones and tissues. Symptoms may include:

  • muscle aches
  • shooting or stabbing pain
  • limited flexibility and/or range of motion
  • inability to stand straight

Some acute syndromes can become more serious if left untreated. These car accident back injuries cause serious and is sometimes debilitating in the larger muscles of the lower back. Suffering from these car accident back injuries can occur on one or both sides of the lower back, may worsen with activity, or may cause night-time muscle spasms.

Car accident back injuries also include spinal cord injuries, which can be very debilitating and can lead to secondary medical problems including infection, sexual issues, muscle spasms, loss of bladder control, and centralized hypersensitivity or discomfort in certain areas of the body.

Treatment and Prevention

Dr. Liechty's clinic has state-of-the-art technology to run a number of medical tests that can be performed on a patient who is thought to have sustained car accident back injuries. In some cases, car accident back injuries can be detected through the use of x-rays, though muscle strains and sprains cannot be treated through this medical means. Through a variety of tests, Dr. Liechty can determine the nature and extent of car accident back injuries.

Research has shown that lap/shoulder seat belts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat occupants of passenger cars by 45 percent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50 percent. For light-truck occupants, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 60 percent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 65 percent. During 2006, 6,983 passenger vehicle occupants ages 14 and younger were involved in fatal wrecks. For those cases in which restraint use was known, 25 percent were unrestrained. Among those who were fatally injured, 45 percent were unrestrained.

Injures suffered while riding in cars are the #1 preventable cause of death in young children. Young children have delicate bodies and bone structures, and because they are light, may be easily thrown upon impact. In a low-speed impact, an infant or small child can smash into the windshield with the same force as if the child fell from a 3-story window.
